Helicopter Flight Controls

The Helicopter Stability Augmentation System computer senses accelerations and rotational rates to compute the command to actuators that affect the pitch and roll axis of the helicopter. Key design features are listed below right:
  • RS-422 interface to the cockpit command unit

  • ARINC 429 interfaces to external sources of position and attitude

  • RS-232 interface to maintenance and diagnostic computer

  • Various discrete inputs and outputs for trim and other external I/O

  • Two channels of EMA motor control

  • Resolver feedback to support low torque ripple sine drive

  • High resolution current drive capability

  • Redundant Hall Effect sensor inputs for high reliability monitoring

  • Two clutch drives to disengage the SAS actuators

  • The design if fully redundant with separate control and monitor processors and decision paths

  • The unit includes an internal tri-axial accelerometer and three axis of rate gyro to enable a full IMU implementation.
